The expansion tank is used to trap expanding coolant from the coolant circuit.

When high coolant temperature occurs, the pressure in the cooling system rises as the coolant expands.

The integrated valves in the cap of the expansion tank dissipate the increase in pressure.

If pressure increases, the valve reduces the system pressure and returns it to the preset value.

When the coolant temperature normalizes, a partial vacuum forms in the cooling system.

This causes the vacuum compensation valve in the tank's filler cap to open, allowing ambient air to flow into the tank until the preset system pressure is reached again.
